Steel executives, union leaders and manufacturing experts told Members of Congress on Wednesday that America's steel industry remains at risk due to unfair foreign imports that pose ongoing threats to jobs and national security.
Scott Paul, president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) testified at the Congressional Steel Caucus hearing chaired by Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Penn.) and Rep. Pete Visclosky (D-Ind.).
“We must make trade work for all Americans,” Paul said. “The thousands of steelworkers still laid off serve as a reminder that we must continue to press for better trade deals and stronger trade enforcement.”
Paul also outlined needed policy priorities to overcome unfair imports.
“Reducing global industrial overcapacity, creating effective mechanisms to deter and penalize currency manipulation, and maintaining China’s non-market economy (NME) status should be top priorities. We must also more closely scrutinize foreign state-owned investments – namely from China – which raise economic and security concerns.”
