Newly released auto index names vehicles made in the USA
American University’s Kogod School of Business recently released an auto index that evaluates and ranks 338 car models based on country of origin and their impact on the U.S. auto industry’s economic vitality.
The findings show that of the 17.5 million vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2015, approximately 65 percent were produced in the United States. That same year, the auto industry directly employed approximately 1.55 million workers and supported an additional 5.7 million jobs in repair shops, part supply stores, and car dealerships.
While the auto industry is a bright spot for America’s manufacturing sector, fewer sedans and SUV’s are being Made in America according to the index, which is now in its fourth year.
Said Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) President Scott Paul:
“When you think of America’s great cars, you expect them to be made right here in America. If you’re looking at a Buick Enclave or a Chevrolet Traverse, you’d be right.
“America’s automakers, with the help of the administration’s auto rescue, have worked on keeping jobs in the U.S. and this year’s index shows that American workers are still making some great American cars.
“Unfortunately the index also shows that fewer SUV’s are being made in the United States. Washington can encourage automakers to keep it made in America by enforcing our trade laws and addressing currency manipulation.
“History has repeatedly shown that when given a fair chance, our autoworkers are always able and willing to compete – and with 65 percent of vehicles being produced in America, we’re off to a good start.”
