Washington, D.C. – The White House on Friday announced initial guidance to federal agencies to begin implementation of President Biden’s executive order on Buy American. This guidance includes directing federal agencies to review waivers to Buy American, with the ultimate goal of limiting waivers and encouraging domestic production of more products purchased by the federal government.
Alliance for American Manufacturing President Scott Paul said:
“AAM is pleased the White House is initiating the next phase of its Buy American Executive Order. We know President Biden has repeatedly implored department and agency heads to strengthen their internal domestic content preference rules, and with this action today, the rubber will hit the road, as they are asked to review problematic waivers, increase transparency, and name senior accountable officials. Waivers in particular have too often undermined American workers and industries.
“It’s essential to close loopholes, reduce waivers, broaden coverage to more federal spending and more manufactured products, and strengthen origin standards for determining whether a product is produced in the United States. The law should mean what it says: an American product should be truly Made in America.
“We look forward to working with the administration to quickly make real progress and commend the president for his leadership on Buy American. Stronger domestic content preference policies and a sizable new investment in infrastructure and clean energy will spur factory job creation and new investment in America.”
