Tesla Motors is at it again–making it's American-made cars even more, well, American-made. The electric car maker will partner with Panasonic Corp. to build a battery manufacturing plant in the U.S. The planned “Gigafactory” is expected to create 6,500 jobs.
Tesla says it's partnering with the Japanese electronics company to optimize manufacturing processes needed to advance the market for electric vehicles.
“The Gigafactory represents a fundamental change in the way large scale battery production can be realized,” said JB Straubel, co-founder of Tesla Motors.
Telsa is aiming for a mass-market electric car, the Model 3, which would cost around $30,000 dollars. The Alliance for American Manufacturing is on board with this approach. Not only will the car run on renewable energy, but it’s also poised to be the most American-made car sold. (It's estimated that 90% of the components in the Model 3 will be made domestically.)
Telsa and Panasonic have not released the exact location for the new factory, but it will be in the U.S.—creating 6,500 jobs. That’s something to get excited about!
