Disclaimer: A 'Daily Show' item on manufacturing, for grown-ups

Posted by scapozzola on 04/23/2010

The Daily Show with John Stewart ran a segment last night on Wham-O Inc. moving its production of Frisbees, hula hoops, and other toys from China back to the U.S.   Adding the usual dose of Daily Show humor, correspondent Aasid Mandvi interrogated Wham-O CEO Kyle Aguilar and suggested that moving the manufacture of "cheap goods" back to the U.S. is a form of "reverse colonialism." Satire aside, the real story, as Aguilar points, out, is that Wham-O is bringing jobs back to the United States.  So what's really being trumpted here is reverse offshoring. Aguilar explains that keeping production in China was becoming more complicated and expensive (rising freight and material costs), while shifting production closer to home has proven helpful in overseeing production and "protecting brand." Mandvi also interviews Daxi Li, Chairman of the Chinese Association of Business, who says that China won't miss the Wham-O jobs because it "wants the hi-tech jobs, not just low-cost manufacturing."  Mandvi adds in a jibe about China's toxic exports by suggesting that, if low-cost manufacturing moves back to the U.S., Americans will have to add their own anti-freeze to their toothpaste. All in all, a humorous four minutes of adult humor that makes some very real observations about creating productive jobs in the United States.  WATCH THE CLIP, below:
