Domestic Competitors Would Line Up

As Congress weighs the merits of an infrastructure investment plan to stimulate the economy, ManufactureThis has frequently noted the need to support U.S. manufacturing and pass a comprehensive economic recovery plan that sources goods and materials from American workers. There are detractors, though, and it’s been suggested that favoring domestically produced goods would raise the overall cost of potential infrastructure projects. In debunking this, we’ve often pointed out simple logic of American tax dollars being spent on the very workers paying for the projects—U.S. taxpayers.

But that said, the blather about higher costs for domestic sourcing runs into the battering ram of USBIC’s Alan Tonelson. In his latest blog, Tonelson offers a strong rebuttal: “let's dispense with all the baloney about how Buy American provisions would destroy competition and efficiency, and leave the field open to loser companies…The U.S. economy is still far and away the world's largest…[and] still contains a huge number of highly competitive domestic companies. Limiting government procurement to their products and to domestic supply chains should generate plenty of competition.” It should also be noted that sourcing from American manufacturers has the additional benefit of yielding reliable, safe, high-quality materials. U.S. home and building contractors have become all too familiar with the dangerous of unsafe imports, including lead-coated steel from China and defective Chinese drywall containing high levels of sulfur. Sourcing from American companies means getting the highest quality products on the market.

Hopefully common sense will prevail in the nation’s capital and the wisdom of sourcing from American manufacturers will shine through.

And the most funny part is that these programmes all fail at the one vault in cattiness of making really tall demands. This happens because the torso gets accustomed to the grimness through which it is order and corrects itself to the new routine and the metabolic process slows down.
