Indiana House Passes Resolution Calling for Use of Domestic Steel
Posted by scapozzola on 02/20/2010
The Indiana House of Representatives has adopted House Resolution 30, which encourages the use of Indiana steel in wind mills and turbines built throughout the state. The resolution was authored by State Rep. Chuck Moseley (D-Portage).
According to Moseley, Indiana has 1,036 wind turbines in operation, 655 under construction, and 3,415 planned to be built by 2015. “None of the steel used in existing towers have been from Indiana,” said Moseley. “Using homegrown steel could produce 75 jobs in steel production and up to 200 jobs in heavy manufacturing."

Cheryl DeCero, from USW Local 1011, District 7, commented:
On Tuesday of this week Steelworkers from Dist. 7 participated in Lobby Day down in Indianapolis. In a year's time, the Buy American - Made in the USA movement has actually had an impact here and we have legislators including it in their proposals. This is no small feat I assure you.
A few weeks ago, on my way into work I heard Senator Karen Tallion touting the "Buy American...Made in America" message on a local radio station. She was directing her comments in regards to an upcoming bridge replacement project. She is insisting on all steel used to be produced here in the state of Indiana. It sure makes perfectly good sense to me, especially considering the bridge is situated directly across from one of those steel producing mills and my employer, Arcelor-Mittal. But the point is, would I have heard this a year and a half ago? I think not. All our efforts through AAM to provide the Buy American "language" and passage of its' proposal in our town councils and city governments have made its way to our state house and made an impact. I had the opportunity to speak with Senator Tallion this past Tuesday and to personally thank her for all she's doing. She was very proud to accept and wear one of our "Keep it Made in America" buttons. In addition, there was also a very important resolution passed that day to provide that Indiana steel be used in the production of wind turbines in our state [Editor's Note: See above].

What Indiana is doing is
What Indiana is doing is great for Indiana. Now Illinois Reps need to start thinking about illinois workers and their families. When a large steelmaker shuts a plant down and creates a job loss they should not profit from Illinois stimulus money.
Fantastic work Representative
Fantastic work Representative Moseley! Let's keep churning out that Hoosier steel and keep us all working.
Cheryl, that is great news about Senator Tallion and her efforts on the bridge project. With folks like you "Keeping 'em Honest" we're sure to turn this economy around.
