The Early Shift

early-shift_thumbnail.jpg On Earth Day, Congressional supporters of cap-and-trade carbon emissions legislation work to pass a bill.  Lots of auto-related news.  Flint is shrinking, Kia comes to Georgia (cash courtesy of a highly-protected home market in South Korea and $400 million in local taxpayer-provided incentives), Chrysler, its bondholders and the auto task force are at odds, while Steve Pearlstein believes the auto task force will persuade everyone to make extraordinary sacrifices. NPR looks at a family put out of work in southwest Washington and the benefits they will receive through Trade Adjustment Assistance.  (What is the media’s obsession with these so-called ‘generous’ benefits?  The U.S. safety net still pales in comparison to European nations.)
