The Early Shift

early-shift.jpg President Obama will deliver remarks on the economy at Georgetown University today.  Consider it the first quarter report on the Administration's efforts to remedy the economic crisis. The Commerce Department reported on the March retail sales and... it's an unpleasant surprise.  March retail sales declined 1.1%, compared to February, while the forecasts were for a slight increase of 0.3%.  It's difficult to expect the sales to rise while more and more Americans are losing their jobs. Everybody's favorite Prophet of Doom, Dr. Nouriel Roubini, weighs in on his recent trip to China to meet with Chinese government officials.  He is very sceptical about China's ability to reach the growth target of 8% this year, official pronouncements notwithstanding.  Surplus economies, like China simply will not be able to sell their products to the rest of the world at the rate necessary to achieve that level of growth.  Instead, Chinese economy needs to foster domestic consumption that is now at a very low level of 36% of the GDP.
