Buy America Works

Capitol Hill: This morning, Representatives Betty Sutton (D-OH) and Tim Murphy (R-PA) offered a Buy America amendment during the Energy & Commerce full committee markup. The amendment was adopted unanimously by voice vote. There were numerous speakers in support of the Sutton amendment, including Reps. Christopher Murphy, Tim Murphy, Mike Doyle, Mike Rogers, and Betty Sutton.
Mike Doyle pointed out that a 2009 report from the Alliance for American Manufacturing outlined that roughly 18,000 new jobs would be created for every $1 billion in new infrastructure spending, and that manufacturing employment gains increase by 33 percent when domestic content is maximized.
The amendment would require projects authorized under the Safe Water Drinking Act to use steel, iron, and manufactured goods that are produced in the U.S. and would provide transparency to the Buy America waiver process.
