Buy America Spartanburg, South Carolina: Synalloy Corporation, a stainless steel piping and specialty chemical manufacturer with operations in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia, has seen a growth in first quarter sales in comparison to 2009. According to MarketWatch:
"The Metals Segment's business is highly dependent on capital expenditures which have been significantly impacted by the economic turmoil. The weak demand significantly affected pipe products."
So why the increase in sales for Synalloy? The corporation's management believes it is in part due to the "Buy American" provisions for iron and steel laid out in the federal stimulus package and claims that they have "seen increased bidding activity in both the water and wastewater treatment and power generation areas, significant parts of our piping systems business." As for the capability of American corporations such as their own in providing metals for use in infratructure projects, Synalloy is very optimistic:
"We believe we are the largest and most capable domestic producer of non-commodity stainless pipe and an effective producer of commodity stainless pipe which should serve us well in the long run."
