Cadmium Jewelry When will children's jewelry vendors come to realize that importing goods from China is not worth the ultimate price they will pay for the defective products. In other words, companies across the U.S. should have learned a lesson or two from Walmart. However, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled 19,000 "Best Friends" bracelets imported by Clair's Boutiques Inc. from Chinese manufacturer Dae Yeon Industries Corporation. The heart lock charm that is attached to the bracelets contain very high levels of cadmium, a toxic substance and known carcinogen that many Chinese manufacturers have been accused of using because they are barred from using lead. At just $12 a piece, these bracelets seem a bargain at first glance, but are hardly worth the danger and hassle in the long run. The problem with China's use of Cadmium as a lead substitute is ongoing and of great concern to many U.S. policymakers:
"Of note, this is not the first time news that cadmium was used by Chinese manufacturers in children’s jewelry has been reported. The ongoing problem previously prompted action by two New York lawmakers. U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, a Democrat, wants the toxic metal defined as a banned hazardous substance, while New York State Senator James S. Alesi, Republican-Perinton, recently introduced a bill in Albany to ban the use of cadmium in jewelry marketed to young children."
