Why Fixing the China Currency Problem Will Keep Us Safe

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) wrote the following "Dear Colleagues" letter to members of the House of Representatives encouraging them to pass the Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act for national security reasons.
In his letter, Hunter says:
"The decline in American defense manufacturing stands in stark contrast to China’s rapid militarization, which is being facilitated in large part by U.S. trade dollars and China’s subsidy regime led by its currency policy. In fact, currency manipulation is a primary source of funding for state-supported companies, not just forcing more U.S. defense production offshore, but also solidifying China’s monopoly over resources such as rare earths and strategic materials. This also gives rise to the possibility of China holding the U.S. industrial supply-chain hostage, something that Japan was recently threatened with over a minor territorial dispute. "China’s trajectories for surface combatants, submarines and fighter aircraft are all up while U.S. production continues to decline. In the area of naval modernization, China has built or purchased at least 38 submarines, 13 destroyers, 16 frigates and 40 fast-attack craft. Also under development are ballistic missiles capable of destroying American aircraft carriers, long-range air defense systems, electronic warfare and network attack platforms, advanced aircraft and counter-space systems. "These advancements constitute a serious threat to U.S. national security and underscore the necessity to reconsider American trade policy with China."Additionally, bipartisan support for the bill continues in discussion of the bill today as Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) has cited the number of jobs lost due to China in his district and has announced his support for the legislation. Rep. Don Manzullo (R-IL) supports H.R. 2378 as well, stating that it "provides another weapon" to fight predatory Chinese trade practices.
