When our favorite Made In America worlds collide: Nanette Lepore and Made Movement
Yesterday, the organizers of that project hosted several dozen leaders from fashion, manufacturing, and advertising worlds in New York City. Former advertising executive Alex Bogusky, who helped get Made Movement off the ground, shared the video with the group, and followed it with a small panel discussion.
Joining him for the chat were friends of the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM), fashion designer Nanette Lepore and Sheryl Connelly of Ford Motor Co. The two women shared personal stories on the impact manufacturing has had in their lives. Lepore explained the dependence she had on New York City’s garment manufacturing when she just beginning her career two decades ago, while Connelly discussed the devastating effects the loss of manufacturing jobs have had on her home state of Michigan.
The made-in-the-USA movement was once powered by unions and patriotic principles, Bogusky said, but now it's ‘more inclusive,’ appealing to the ideals of liberal locavores and green activists because of its potential to reduce the environmental impact of global manufacturing. He pointed to Google's production of Google Glass in the U.S. as evidence that manufacturing can return to America's shores.
At AAM we’re excited to see how the project evolves, and especially to see American citizens energized about Made In The USA. However, we’ll remain cautiously optimistic (emphasis on the ‘cautiously’) where the mass re-shoring of production by tech companies like Google and Apple is concerned.
We agree with Bogusky: It certainly can happen, but it will take quite a lot of public pressure, likely coupled with policy initiatives, to see it done.
Perhaps the Million American Jobs project is a step towards that public pressure.
