WaPo: China currency bill is a “win for the middle class”
In an excellent Washington Post op-ed, columnist Harold Meyerson discusses the bipartisan China currency bill that the Senate will vote to the bring to the floor on Monday—and why it’s an indisputable win for the middle class:
“The news that our trade with China has been bad for the American middle class has finally reached the U.S. Senate. …For students of America’s deranged romance with free trade, the fact that the Senate is willing to take on China is little short of amazing”
Meyerson cites the Economic Policy Institute’s (EPI) recent report which shows that a staggering 2.8 million jobs have been lost over the past decade due to our trade deficit with China, but also notes that compelling data like this has been around for years. Until now though, it has been largely ignored:
“Until now, however, the Senate has remained largely impervious to the evidence of Chinese cheating and American decay. But elite opinion, which the Senate does heed, is finally catching up with mass opinion on whether losing our manufacturing base is a bad thing.”
We’re glad the Senate has finally focused on this crucial issue. Make sure YOUR Senators vote for a bill that will end China’s job-killing, market distorting currency manipulation. Click HERE to email them now!
