VIDEO: Why BART needs to get a better deal for America when purchasing new subway cars.
As we're been reporting, the San Francisco Bay Area's BART transit system has been deciding on a $3 billion contract to purchase new subway cars. BART officials have tentatively settled on a deal with Montreal-based Bombardier, which has scrambled to meet the minimum Buy America threshold of 60 percent U.S. materials and assembly for the subway cars. A close second, though, is Alstom, a French company, that has committed to using at least 95 percent American-made content in the cars they deliver.
BART officials have been facing strong objections from groups like the AFL-CIO over the potential failure to maximize job creation in the U.S. The Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) has been urging that BART officials support U.S. manufacturing when making their decision, and that they go with the most "Made in America" option.
In a recent op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle, AAM Executive Director Scott Paul explained why BART should go with the highest possible American-made content.
Now, a group called BARTforAmerica.com has posted an eloquent video urging that BART "create more jobs for U.S. workers by going back to the table and getting a better deal for America." Watch the full video below.
