Associated Press: Meanwhile, U.S. factory activity shrank for the third straight month in August as new orders, production, and employment all fell.

Wall Street Journal: However, some good news in the U.S. auto sector as Chrysler, GM, and Ford all reported double-digit sales gains in August from a year earlier.
