Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) talk "China job drain"
Today, we shared with you a new report from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) that shows a staggering 2.8 million jobs, largely in manufacturing, have been lost over the past decade as a result of the growing U.S. trade deficit with China.
Every Congressional district in the country has lost jobs due to the trade deficit—and it seems that some members of Congress are finally paying attention to the China job drain.
Today on the Senate floor, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) referenced the report in a debate on worker assistance programs:
The Alliance for American Manufacturing released a report this morning that 2.8 million jobs have been lost or displaced in America between 2001 and 2010 due to our growing trade deficit with China. 2.8 million jobs. As we speak about expanding trade adjustment assistance so that those who’ve lost their jobs to non-free trade agreement countries like India and China, we are talking about putting Americans back to work. This should not be viewed as an obstacle, a diversion, or inconsistent with economic recovery.
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) also highlighted the report in a press release on newly introduced legislation on worker retraining programs, trade, and currency manipulation.
