Role models hope to draw women into manufacturing sector jobs
It seems each week that the media reports on a new case of manufacturing jobs going unfilled, despite the unemployment rate, because of the specialized training necessary to fill the positions.
In fact, ManufactureThis has told you about a few such situations.
One potential way to solve that issue? Encourage women to pursue manufacturing jobs.
Writing for CNN Money, Parija Kavilanz says:
According to the National Association of Manufacturers, about a third of all manufacturing workers today are women.
But manufacturing is rapidly being transformed from a labor-intensive field to a high-tech one. The change, and a nascent pick up in domestic manufacturing, has created thousands of factory jobs nationwide that, experts say, more women are starting to seek out.
Kavilanz shares the stories of two women, April Senase, who has been working in manufacturing for 13 years, and Diana Peters, who opened a manufacturing trade school in 2005. (Senase teaches night classes at Peters’s school.)
Senase, according to the article, got her start in Computer Aided Machining (CNC), after a teacher pointed out her knack for math and encouraged her to pursue CNC because the pay was good. She took shop classes in high school, won competitions and eventually a scholarship to vocational school.
Also interviewed in the article is Diana Peters’s husband Tom, who runs the school with his wife.
'Diana is already a role model for women students because it's rare to have a manufacturing school owned and operated by a woman,' said Tom, director of business operations. And by hiring Senase, the Peters hope to further demystify the industry as a 'boys' club.'
