NAFTA: 16 years later

A new study on the effects of NAFTA shows that it hurt workers in import-sensitive industries.

University of Virginia economists John McLaren and Shushanik Hakobyan used 1990 and 2000 census data to look at the effect of NAFTA on communities whose businesses had strong trade ties with Mexico and on industries affected by Mexican competition. Essentially, they found that there was a significant effect on wages in trade-affected industries.
