May 12: A #SOSJobs rally in Illinois, and a free film in DC!

Posted by mmcmullan on 05/12/2014

Good morning,

and welcome to the Early Shift. Here’s what we’re doing this week: Rallying. We’re joining workers in Granite City, Illinois who manufacture oil country tubular goods (OCTG).  Those are the steel pipes and tubes used for oil and gas production. The OCTG sector is facing a flood of illegal imports that could swamp domestic steelmakers … and domestic steel jobs.

Are you in the greater St. Louis area? Then join the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM), the United Steelworkers, and state and federal officials this Friday afternoon as we call on Washington to enforce our on-the-books trade rules (and if you can’t make it to Granite City, Illinois, you can take action from home by clicking here).

What else is happening out there? U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew is headed to China this week for another round of bilateral economic talks. It’s gonna be a quick trip, writes Ian Katz at Bloomberg, and currency manipulation is expected to come up:

Currency, always a sensitive issue between the U.S. and China, has become increasingly thorny since Chinese authorities have let the yuan lose 2.8 percent of its value this year after it gained 3 percent in 2013.

We sure hope so. Why?

Did you know? It's Infrastructure Week. A number of policy organization, trade groups, and labor unions are hosting events that will explore how best to improve the state of America's public infrasturcture. If you're in Washington, DC there are a few in-person events to attend; if not, there are plenty of webinars you can participate in from home (we're particularly interested in this one from the American Iron and Steel Institute).

And lastly: In the DC area tonight? Want to catch a free flick? You’re in luck; AAM has a few free tickets for “Note By Note: The Making of Steinway L1037.” It’s showing tonight at 7:30 pm ET, as part of the DC Labor FilmFest, at the American Film Institute Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland – and it’s right near the Metro. Send your name and phone number to and we’ll be in touch.

And that's it for this Early Shift, America. Remember: Rally this week in Illinois! Save Our Steel Jobs. Join the conversation online with this hashtag: #SOSJobs.
