House Ways and Means Committee will hold hearing tomorrow on U.S.-China economic relationship
The House Ways and Means Committee will be holding a hearing tomorrow on the U.S.-China economic relationship. It will take place in the Longworth House Office Building beginning at 10:00am.
In advance of the hearing, the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) sent a letter to Committee Chairman Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI) and Ranking Member Rep. Sandy Levin (D-MI) vigorously urging them to address China’s job-killing currency manipulation:
“Currency manipulation stands at the forefront of these concerns and merits immediate attention. China intentionally devalues its currency to gain an artificial, unfair trade advantage over goods made by American workers. The net effect is a subsidy for Chinese-made goods that enter our market and a tax on our exports to China. Left unchecked, the outcome of this mercantilist policy has been massive and growing trade deficit for the U.S. economy, leading to lost production, reduced wages, high unemployment, and larger budget deficits.”
AAM also sent the Committee a one page summary of the economic toll China’s currency manipulation has taken on the nation as a whole, as well as a state-by-state breakdown of the number of jobs lost in each Member’s district due to the ongoing trade deficit with China. AAM looks forward to working with the Committee to focus on such key issues as currency manipulation; illegal subsidies; intellectual property theft; forced technology transfer; preferential treatment for state-owned enterprises; rare-earth mineral export restraints; and the host of other protectionist, predatory practices employed by the Chinese government that stand in the way of a balanced, reciprocal trade relationship. These are all important issues, but let there be no doubt that China’s currency manipulation stands at the forefront of the problematic U.S.-China economic relationship, and should be immediately addressed by the Committee.
