February 21, 2014: Make that Buy American commitment bigger!

Good afternoon, 

and happy Friday! It’s warm as mug in Washington, DC, and the snowstorm of this same month seems so very long ago. We’ve made it through to the other side; it's north of 50 degrees, and Punxsatawney Phil can take his advice and shove it. We’re ready for spring.

But enough about weather and groundhogs, let’s get down to brass tacks. What’s the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) been up to this week? And what’s coming next?

Well...Last week, we shouted a complaint into the Internet void about import-fueled retail behemoth Walmart’s Buy American campaign. "An extra $5 billion a year on American goods?" we fumed. "For a company with a procurement budget larger than the GDP of Thailand? That’s a drop in the bucket!"

$5 billion a year is nothing to laugh at, but it could be more. Much more. A lot more. So why not have Walmart double its commitment? Oh yes. We've got an idea:

So what else is happening out there? Lots!

The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission is holding a hearing right now about our relationship with Beijing, and you can watch it live. At the moment experts are talking about trade law enforcement, and this afternoon they’ll be discussing China's ongoing market barriers (think of things like state-owned enterprises and other non-market forces at play in the People's Republic).


A writer for USA Today caught up with the WeatherTech, the auto accessory company that touted its American-made credentials in a Super Bowl ad spot. Read about that cred, and catch the commercial right here.
