Checking Wal-Mart's Shelves for American-made goods, Part 4

Posted by scapozzola on 05/18/2011

ManufactureThis has been looking at Wal-Mart stores for the past week, checking to see if the retail chain is indeed living up to its claim of selling mostly Made in USA goods

The New York Times reports that an increase in grocery sales has failed to revive merchandise sales at retail chains:

while [consumers] are spending more on food at Wal-Mart than they did a year ago, they are buying less in most other categories.

Wal-Mart may claim greater sales of Made-in-USA products, but it's only because people are buying little other than food in such a tight economy.

Continuing with our daily investigation, Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) Field Coordinator Dan Lawson decided to check on the various sections of his local Wal-Mart in Salem, New Hampshire.

He took an interesting approach and asked his wife to make up a potential shopping list of groceries and household items.  He then walked into a Wal-Mart for the "first time in 17 years" to check where each item was made/grown.

What he found runs counter to some of Wal-Mart's claims that food and household goods are mostly sourced from the U.S.

Made in USA

Joann's Fabrics carries some very nice paper fingertip towels , and other holiday paperware made in Clintonville, Wisconsin. I hate to send my family in Ireland gifts made in China . Along with some guest soaps made here in Michigan I have a light ship weight gift for my cousin.Look at these products & let Joann's know you appreciate USA made.

Made in USA

If all americans would read the label and demand american made products, maybe our economy would be in a better place for all. My son doesn't read labels and gave me a "high end" product as a gift. Coach purse for $350.00 is made in China. What?! That much money and its still made in China!!! He thought the price reflected where is was made. He reads labels NOW!

made in usa

Our economy will fix itself if all americans would DEMAND more american made products! We should all start to read labels and ask/demand for american made products. I was recently given a "high end" item by my son. He doesn't check for labels. What a suprise!! A $350.00 Coach purse is made in China. He took for granted that the price reflected were is was made. He reads labels NOW!!
