Check your food sources-- buy U.S.A.-grown food for your holiday meals

While healthy, organic, grown-in-USA options remain a popluar food source for the American consumer, there have been rising concerns about unsafe produce from China.

In 2010, the U.S. imported 4 billion pounds of food (worth almost $5 billion) from China. According to the Orange County Register, "In the past two years alone, the FDA halted shipments for the U.S. market that were found to be pumped full of steroids, antibiotics, chlorine, arsenic and other deadly chemicals to either make meat juicier, fruit and vegetables grow larger, or to extend shelf life."

Here's a breakdown of some common food imports from China:

  • 90 percent of the Vitamin C supplements sold in the U.S.
  • 67 percent of the apple juice consumed in the U.S. – more than 400 million gallons annually.
  • 75 percent of U.S.-consumed tilapia (288 million pounds in 2010).
  • 50 percent of cod.
  • 20 percent of spinach.
  • More than 88 million pounds of candy a year.

As you and your family prepare for your Thanksgiving holiday meals, consider buying safe, U.S.-grown food.
