CBS News: Arcelor Mittal’s 'Steelworker for the Future' program preps next generation of Indiana steelworkers

Arcelor Mittal’s Steelworker for the Future program is helping to train a new generation of steelworkers in Northwest Indiana, reports CBS News. The program, launched in partnership with the United Steelworkers (USW) and Ivy Tech Community College, offers students the chance to participate in a mixture of classroom and paid on-site training that will prepare them for careers at Arcelor Mittal’s Burns Harbor, Indiana facility.

Though Northwest Indiana’s steelworker population has shrunk from 100,000 to 10,000 over the past few decades, there is still an acute demand for skilled steelworkers in the region. As Byron Butterfield, a professor at Ivy Tech put it, the Steelworker for the Future program is a “golden opportunity” for young students in search of well-paying careers.
