Buy America Works

Buy America Congressman Joe Courtney (D-CT-2) wrote a recent op-ed for the local Connecticut Journal Inquirer entitled, quite simply, "Make it in America." After telling the story of his experience at the commissioning of the new Navy submarine, the USS Missouri, where he was reminded "that “American-Made” is still the gold standard," the Congressman explained that he is "working to advance a “Make it in America” policy that closes tax loopholes for shipping jobs overseas, boosts incentives to create American clean energy jobs, and ensures that American firms can compete fairly for government contracts." As more and more manufacturing jobs are sent overseas, it becomes increasingly important that the Buy America requirements outlined in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) are enforced and that, whenever possible, American companies are given the opportunity to receive stimulus dollars. In further describing the USS Missouri, a means to greater national security that was crafted in the United States, Rep. Courtney said:
"Built in record time and with the most advanced technology available, the new submarine is a testament to the hard work and skill of the men and women of Electric Boat and the hundreds of small- and mid-sized manufacturing shops that comprise the submarine industrial base."
