Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) Billboard campaign "takes jab at steel in new Bay Bridge."

In the San Jose Mercury News, Eric Kurhi reported on the Alliance for American Manufacturing's (AAM) successful launch of its new "Should Be Made in America" campaign.

At a press conference today in Emeryville, California, and with the new span of the Oakland Bay Bridge clearly visible in the background, AAM Executive Director Scott Paul explained that the Bay Bridge is "the most egregious example" of an infrastructure project that was outsourced to China rather than "Made in America."

The Bay Bridge has been plagued by costly delays and skyrocketing costs due to faulty steel imported from China.

Paul explained that the steel in the signature suspension structure "should have and could have come from the United States instead of a factory near Shanghai, China." He described it as "a stupid, shortsighted decision, and one we hope is never repeated by a governor anywhere or at anytime."

AAM launched its campaign because "trillions of dollars' worth of infrastructure repair projects will be necessary throughout the country in the next decade."  Paul said those projects should be sourced from U.S. manufacturers in order to maximize the benefit to the U.S. economy.

The San Francisco Chronicle's CITY INSIDER also reported on AAM's campaign to paint the Bay Bridge as "an emblem of international outsourcing that should be eradicated":

At a press conference at the top of an Emeryville hotel with a sweeping view of the bridge, the group unveiled posters reading “The Bay Bridge — 100% foreign steel” with the tagline “Should Be Made in America.com.”

“It was originally designed to save tax dollars, to be more efficient,” said Scott Paul, executive director of the alliance. “It turned out in hindsight to be a horrible decision.  It ended up sourcing steel from a Chinese government- supported fabrication and steel company when those jobs could have been done right here at a reasonable cost to taxpayers.”
