AAM Media Coverage for #SOTU 2014

Posted by TGarland on 01/29/2014

The President delivered the State of the Union (SOTU) last night in front of Congress, the Cabinet, the Supreme Court and hundreds of guests and reporters. With the speech behind him, the Commander in Chief took his message on the road today. His second stop: a US Steel plant in West Mifflin, PA (right outside of Pittsburgh, for the non-Pennsylvania crowd).

The President highlighted manufacturing in his address and solidifed it's importance with the stop in Pittsburgh. And that's great, but Mr. President, attention alone won't help our manufacturing sector. We need a national manufacturing strategy.

And, hey, what do you know? Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) has one. In a recent op-ed, published in papers nationwide, AAM President Scott Paul laid out the groundwork for said strategy:

First: Guarantee enough new infrastructure investment to repair and upgrade our roads, bridges, ports, and energy grid. Doing so wouldn’t be politically impossible. The spending bill just passed by Congress includes a sizable increase for water infrastructure investment.
Second: Ensure the government is spending our tax dollars on American-made steel, iron, and manufactured goods instead of outsourcing those projects to China. In short, buy American.

Third: Increase tax incentives for reshoring (the return of jobs from overseas), and only consider reforming corporate taxes in a way that retains and expands incentives for domestic research, hiring, production, and capital expenses.

Fourth: Build clear career pathways for young people and the long-term unemployed to ensure a dynamic workforce for American manufacturing.

Fifth: Set a trade agenda that emphasizes reciprocity and balance, starting with China. We should aim to halve our record trade deficit with Beijing, and we could do so in part by passing bipartisan legislation to deter currency manipulation.

This op-ed appeared in: Real Clear Politics, the Detroit News, the Rockford Register, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Fort-Wayne Journal Gazette, and the Providence Journal.

Here's more AAM-related coverage from the SOTU:

Senator Chris Coons (DE) and Representative Tim Ryan (OH-13) joined AAM for a pre-SOTU roundtable to talk about jobs and manufacturing.

AAM President Scott Paul joined the Ed Show on MSNBC to talk about a national manufacturing strategy ahead of the SOTU.

During the SOTU, AAM President Scott Paul acted as fact-checker for ABC News on all things manufacturing.

And finally, Paul reacted to the president's SOTU:

This is the third consecutive State of the Union in which there has been a strong rhetorical focus on manufacturing, and that’s welcome. But the progress, despite the rosy picture painted by the President, has been painfully slow. And in some cases, such as the trade deficit with China, we’ve seen backsliding.
